Once you get the price that is affordable to you, do not forget to consider fees, taxes and of course, car insurance if you are renting a car. If you already have a major credit card and a car insurance on your own personal car, you will be most likely already insured and you can just decline rental insurance from the rental company.

Consider car pickup locations which are not on an airport's property. Usually airport locations have higher rental fees primarily because they have constant flow of customers and they charge additional airport fees.

Read your contract before you sign it! Many rental companies impose restrictions on mileage and geographical locations. For example, if you rent a car in the state of California, you may not be allowed to drive outside of the state to go to Las Vegas.
